An Electrocardiogram (ECG) records the electrical activity of the heart. The heart muscle contracts in response to particular stimuli which are generated from a number of electrodes placed at different points on the body. Each electrode provides a view of the heart from a different angle and gives a recording of the speed of heart beats and an assessment of its beating rhythm.
The ECG detects when the heart is beating abnormally (arrhythmic) and helps determine the cause. If the heart is affected by factors such as a lack of oxygen, inadequate blood supply, inflammation or a heart attack, then changes appear on the ECG to confirm this.
