| Why external monitoring? |
You can see the world. But can it see you? |
 |
Some ISPs provide "site-monitoring" services as part of their hosting package and, in some cases, even offer pro-rata refunds for downtime. However, this service utilises a LOCAL monitoring technique to check server performance and connectivity only on the inside. This means that they are often unable to detect many of the problems encountered by end-users such as backbone network outages and slowdowns, faulty routing advertisements, failed peering arrangements between networks and platform software errors.
|
Some ‘internal’ monitoring solutions require extra hardware or software which then needs to be configured and maintained. ‘Internal’ monitoring cannot offer the real end-user perspective and does not offer objective measurement. net-ecg is an independent service to monitor the health of your site with no ties to ISPs, bandwidth providers or website platforms. It monitors for a full 24 hours, not just for the time that is considered relevant.

A 99% uptime guarantee means that your site can still be inaccessible for 446 minutes per month (over seven hours!) and for 99.9%, this is still 44.6 minutes per month. “Downtime” usually occurs during peak periods when servers are overloaded. Often, all that is monitored is the connection method to your site at the local level. A so-called “ping” technique is used to make sure that the line or port is open for business but it does not check the important protocols to ensure that the site is both available for connection AND delivering pages correctly.

net-ecg is a hosted, web-based service so there is no requirement for extra hardware or software. It uses multiple points on the internet for monitoring which offer multiple perspectives, error verification and service redundancy. It helps you minimise your downtime, maximise your investment and manage your risk.
