| How does it work? |
See through your customers’ eyes
External monitoring is the only way to ensure your website and other web devices are available and performing because it actually simulates your customers’ interaction with them. Your site may be affected by interruptions or network congestion, by failure of web servers or routers, by problems with firewalls, or by errors in the software. Additionally, devices that link to your site to make it more dynamic such as databases, FTP servers, image servers or mail servers may fail in their own right and prevent your end-user from interacting with the site as you intended.

Multiple monitors for error verification
net-ecg makes use of multiple monitoring agents placed at strategic points on the Internet for redundancy and accuracy. These monitoring agents simulate frequent end-user requests by using the exact same protocols as a web-browser. Requests are sent at definable intervals by the monitors to web devices (e.g. websites, mail servers, secure servers) and the responses are checked and recorded. Response time thresholds are pre-set for each device being monitored and, if it does not respond within set limits, the monitor records the status of the device as "down - awaiting verification". Simultaneously, it runs a Trace Route and records the results. A second monitor, (elsewhere on the Internet) then reports the response from the device as good and within the pre-set limit. In this case, the monitor has verified that all is well and the status is reset to "up - verified". Alternatively, if the second monitor experiences the same slow or incorrect response from that web device, another Trace Route is started, the status "down-verified" is recorded and, this time, an alert is triggered to be sent to the website manager by email or SMS text message.
Alerts for genuine problems
When the status has been recorded by the monitors as "up-verified" again, a further alert is generated to inform the website manager that the device is available and performing once more. This verification process reduces the potential for false alerts from the net-ecg monitors. One monitoring agent may be unable to reach the device or site because of local Internet outages whilst the others can access it without problem. Consequently, website managers are not alerted about unconfirmed or spurious problems. However, thanks to net-ecg's on-line control panel, it is still possible to find out why that one monitor experienced a localised problem by checking the instant Trace Route results for that device, and from that monitor.
Unbiased information for better decisions
Being browser-based, the control panel can be accessed from any PC with an Internet connection. Availability and performance data for all monitored devices, from all monitors are shown graphically with the ability to drill-down for more detailed information. These on-line statistics and graphical performance measurements are augmented by weekly email reports that are sent direct to the website manager's inbox. Over time, this independent, unbiased information helps organisations understand their e-business better and allows them to make more informed plans and decisions for its development.
